Intensely expressive and tangibly sensual in their visual appeal, the paintings of Nicole Axelrod
deliver an engaging, voyeuristic and complex aesthetic.  Axelrod has explored the visual impact
and structure of the female figure in conjunction with her drippy and fluid landscapes throughout
her career.  Fascinated with the energy of forms and their articulation through expressions of
light and fragmented space, she has developed a system of turning figures inside out and
depicting perceived patterns of emotional heat within the boundaries of the figures themselves.

Axelrod studied at the at the Museum of Rochester as well as the gifted students program at
Nazareth College, studying classical nudes and learning to incorporate naturalism into her work.  
She later acquired a degree in fine arts at Hofstra University where she developed her drawing
skills fully, establishing the precision with which her nudes and landscapes are constructed.

Describing her creative process as “subconscious”, Axelrod delves deeply into her own sensory
perception and forms figures based partially on drawing studies, detailing them with
spontaneously guided patterns which lend the figures their depth and tonal shifts.  Inspired by
the painterly exploration of the human form as rendered realists such as Lucien Freud, Pearlstein
and Eric Fischl, Axelrod endows her paintings with subjective context while preserving flawless
figural landscapes.

Axelrod has taken her subjects to the next level by using the figure as a central form rather than
a mere study. Her work has developed rapidly and changed significantly since her entrance into
the realm of professional art, and her creative potential and innovative style is undeniable.  She
has captured the attention of both youthful spirits and educated art collectors including several
corporate and private commissions.  Axelrod splits her time between New York City and
Rochester where she finds natural beauty and much inspiration.  Her latest works are reflected
by her growing interest in portraits.
